Understanding Numbers

Performance Task Objectives

  • Read and write whole numbers to billions
  • Compare and order whole numbers
  • Round whole numbers
  • Interpret and display data from a table, frequency table, or line graph
  • Solve problems including those that involve using number sense

Sunshine State Standards

  • MA.3.A.4.1
  • MA.3.A.6.1
  • MA.3.A.6.2
  • MA.4.A.6.1

Materials

  • Student recording sheet
  • Centimeter graph paper
  • Paper and pencil

Student arrangement

  • Individual or small group

Task

Present the problem on the student Recording Sheet to your students. Students should construct line graphs only, not bar graphs.

Performance Criteria

  • Does the student’s table show the population in an order that is reasonable?

  • Does the student’s graph show the population rounded to a reasonable place?

  • Does the line graph correctly represent the data?

  • Does the student’s statements accurately describe the change in population based on their table or line graph?

Directions:

Population of the U.S. from 1930 to 1980
1930: 123,202,624
1940132,164,569
1950: 151,325,798
1960: 179.323,175
1970: 203,302,031
1980: 226,545,518

Your task is to present a report showing the change in population between 1930 and 1980.

1. Round the data, then make a table and line graph (not a bar graph) to display the data in a way that would best highlight the change.

2. Write two statements about the change in population in the U.S. between 1930 and 1980.

3. Using the information from your chart or graph, write and solve an addition or subtraction word problem.
