Materials:
Discussion cards.
Procedure:
Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a discussion topic from the following:
- Is prejudice learned, inherent, or both? Explain.
- Is there a connection between social customs and prejudice? Explain and give examples.
- What is the attraction of using a scapegoat? What are the results of scapegoating for both the perpetrators and victims of this practice?
- Discuss the following statement: "Genocide can never be eliminated because it is deeply rooted in human nature." Do you agree or disagree?
- Are literary, theater, and cartoon caricatures of the lifestyle of ethnic and minority groups a form of prejudice? Explain and give examples.
- Why do some people join groups such as the KKK?
- How can frustration cause prejudice?
- Discuss how prejudice and discrimination are not only harmful to the victim, but also to those who practice them.
- Is it possible to grow to adulthood without harboring some prejudice?
- What can you do to fight prejudice in your neighborhood or school?
Provide time for groups to generate responses to the questions. Then, share group questions and responses with the class.
Assessment: Evaluate students based on group participation and the responses.
