Too Many Details

The most common problem in identifying the main idea and supporting details is underlining too much information.

The example on the right shows a poorly underlined passage. It would be difficult to use this underlined paragraph to answer the kind of questions posed in FCAT. Underline only the key words.

Water is considered to be the most important element for the survival of people, plants, and animals .We all need to drink a certain amount of water each day in order to keep our bodies healthy .People and animals can actually live longer without food than they can without water. If we do not get enough rain, plants die and animals will not have enough food to eat. Water is an important element in our lives.
