Exponential Equations: Overview of the Lesson

Get a Half Life

  • The students modeled an exponential decay situation in this activity.
  • Students were given M&Ms which they poured onto a plate
  • They removed the M&Ms that had the Ms facing upwards and counted the ones remaining on the plate.
  • They repeated the procedure until they only had 1 or 2 M&Ms on their plates.
  • The data was put into the graphing calculators and they attempted to graph a line using a linear equation.
  • Then they did the same thing for an exponential equation and saw a curve.
  • This helped them see that an exponential equation matched their data better than the line.
