Time for Teaching Research Skills

There are many online resources available to assist with teaching research skills.  A lesson from ReadWriteThink, Scaffolding Methods for Research Paper Writing, includes a lesson plan, resources, standards and materials needed.  One of the resources is a citation checklist which may be used in any subject.

Another lesson is teaching internet research strategies.  The main topics covered in this set of lessons is  search strategies, features of several search engines, and the citation of internet sources.  Students also need practice in determining the validity of various internet posts.

Verizon Thinkfinity’s ReadWriteThink has a useful self assessment scoring rubric for research skills.

Florida promotes the use of the FINDS Research Model.

Whatever instructional tools used to cover this topic, it is an important one and will assist students in years to come.
