Reading Endorsement (Online)

Overview

The State of Florida Reading Endorsement Certificate Program is designed to meet the needs of K-12 teachers who want to increase their effectiveness as teachers of reading. In order to earn the Florida Reading Endorsement, students must have a valid teaching certificate and successfully complete fifteen credit hours of study. These courses provide an in-depth view of reading research, theory, and the application of sound and current scientific research.

Program

The Online Reading Endorsement consists of five courses:

  • RED 6749 History and Foundations of Reading: Prevention and Intervention of Reading Difficulties
  • RED 6544 Cognition, Comprehension, and Content Area Reading
  • RED 6545 Vocabulary and Word Study
  • RED 6540 Assessment in Literacy
  • RED 6846 Practicum in Reading

Admissions

Applicants to the program must hold a bachelor’s degree and current teaching certification from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Visit http://www.gradcerts.usf.edu/admissions.asp to access the application.

In addition to the application , please submit:

  • Official transcripts
  • A resume
  • A 250-word letter of interest stating your objectives in pursuing this course of study
  • A copy of your current Florida teaching certificate

Registration

To register (after admission), go to the Graduate School website then click on the link for Registering for Classes.

To access online course materials, students must have the USF NetID (email account). To set up a USF email account, visit: https:// netid.usf.edu/una/ to obtain the NetID.

New students, including those studying online, may obtain a USFCard. Please visit: http://auxsvc.usf.edu/usfcard.html to obtain the USFCard.

FAQ

How long will it take me to complete the program?

Most students complete the program within 2 semesters.

What computer hardware do I need to be successful in the program?

Because of our emphasis on media literacy and the technical support provided by the iTeach Initiative, we strongly encourage the use of Mac computers. We recommend the use of a Mac operating system that is less than 2 years old.

What basic computer competencies do I need to be successful in the program?

You will be expected to have access to and be able to work in Microsoft Word, Key Note, Keynote or Powerpoint, and Excel. Additionally, you should be familiar with basic operations in the online environment as well as Black Board, the USF Course Management System.

Do any of these courses count towards a degree?

Up to 12 hours of course credits may be applied to a graduate degree pending departmental approval.
