Stephanie Bridges: When we got home
Clip 3
When my family returned home from Vietnam, all of our friends were there to greet us; you know, see a real soldier and all that stuff. The whole neighborhood came to see our family - six kids, all school age; my mother gave birth to six children in seven years. My father could not take his uniform off because all the kids in our neighborhood and all the kids at P.S 31 came to see a real life soldier that had just returned from war dressed in his uniform. He must have had that uniform on for hours. Our friends and neighbors had heard about the war, saw it in the news - protest this, protest that - read about it in the paper, and talked about it . Actually seeing a real soldier was not something they were used to and they thought it was cool.
