Student: Can you talk to us and explain a few phrases in Vietnamese?
Alex: Well, because we were a small unit of 8-13 people, everyone in the squad had to know how to shoot every weapon. Everyone also had to know how to use a radio to call Medivacs or call in artillery or other help. So, we all had to learn a little bit of the language. While I was there, I tried teaching some of the kids English, but I think I learned more Vietnamese than they learned English. I would say something in English; they would say it in Vietnamese. We would trade back and forth like that.
