Taylor: Racism
Clip 4
Student: Did you experience any racism over there?
Taylor: Yes, quite a bit. There were cross burnings in Vietnam. Out in the field where the fighting was going on, you didn't see much of that stuff, but when you came back for rest and relaxation, most of the black veterans would go to one side of the base and the white veterans would go to the other side. There were pockets of people who would burn flags, burn crosses; you would see the confederate flag flying. You would see people who were radical blacks with the black power salute and all that stuff. It was there.
Student:
You would think that the troops would have been more unified, since you were all fighting for your country.
Taylor: You'd find that where the fighting was at - people pulling together and helping eachother. But, once we were away from the fighting, people tended to go their own way.
