The Music Education program was initiated in 1960 and continued under the leadership of Dr. Virginia Bridges until her retirement in 1995. Faculty members who were instrumental in the foundation and promotion of the program included Dr. Samuel Miller and Dr. Gerald Prescott who joined the faculty in the mid-‘60s. Dr. Larry Cullison, Dr. Vance Jennings, Dr. Janet Moore, Dr. Chris Doane, and Dr. John Richmond joined the faculty in the mid to late 1980s. The program prepared teachers to work at the primary and secondary school level. Faculty members also taught a course called “Music for the Child,” that was a requirement for elementary education majors. Since 1981, the program has been housed under the School of Music of the USF College of Fine Arts.
