One & Two-Step Equations: Overview of the Lesson

Hands-On Equations

  • In this activity, solving one- and two-step equations was reinforced by using manipulatives.
  • The students focused on The Golden Rule of Equations:
    • What you do on one side, you must do on the other
    • This is represented by a balanced scale
  • The students formed zero sets to reach zero and eliminate numbers from the equation.
  • The goal is to have variables (represented by blue and white pawns) on one side of the scale and integers (represented by green and red number cubes) on the other side.
