Spaghetti Bridges
Linear Equations: Overview of the Lesson

Overview of the Lesson

In this lesson, the students will discover linear equations.

  1. Drop pennies into a cup supported by spaghetti
  2. Begin by using one piece of spaghetti
  3. Continue until five pieces of spaghetti have been broken
  4. Graph the results
  5. Make predictions based on the graph
  6. Write a rule using words
  7. Write an equation related to the words: y = mx + b
    • b is the number of pennies needed to get the first piece of spaghetti to break
    • m is the number of additional pennies needed to get more pieces of spaghetti to break
