Entrance Gate. This grand memorial was created in the 1950s as an imposing backdrop for East German anti-fascist commemoration ceremonies. The architects were Ludwig Deiters, Hans Grothewohl, Horst Kutzat, Hubert Matthes, Hugo Namslauer, and Kurt Tausendschön. ![]()

First Stela. This is the first of seven stelae (stone monuments) along a descending processional way. The relief sculptures on the front of each stela record the suffering and resistance of the Buchenwald prisoners and reflect a Communist interpretation of events. The stelae were created by Reneé Graetz, Waldemar Grzimek, and Hans Kies. On the back of each stela is a poem by Johannes R. Becher. ![]()
