Maintenance and moderate additions to the Educational Technology Clearinghouse (ETC) and other online FCIT resources

All existing FCIT websites have been maintained through the project period. During the 12 months from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, FCIT websites received a total of 420,203,216 hits, or an average of 35,016,935 per month. The graph below tracks the server hits month by month. FCIT website usage traditionally drops off during the summer months and during the winter vacation period, but clearly the trend during the school months (Sept-Nov and Jan-May) is upward. Additions to ETC and FCIT websites are listed in the section below entitled "Substantial addition of digital content to ETC and FCIT sites."

Supervisory personnel and infrastructure to develop, implement and support the following separately funded activities:

Clipart, ETC. During the 12 month period this site has been expanded from 32,500 illustrations to 37,650, an increase of over 5,000 illustrations. We have especially added to the areas of anatomy, animals, mathematics, and plants. Five thousand American History Clipart CDs and 5,000 Plants and Animals Clipart CDs were distributed during FETC. An additional 1,500 of each of these two titles have been produced for the T&L institutes.

Tech-Ease. The Tech-Ease website has been completely updated twice during the project period: once just before the Florida Educational Technology Conference and a second time just before the Teaching and Learning Summer Institutes. Five thousand Tech-Ease CDs were distributed during FETC. An additional 1,500 updated Tech-Ease CDs have been produced for the T&L Institutes.

Lit2Go. During the project period we added 576 completed passages to the Lit2Go site, plus 100 podcasts in the "Make Math Matter" series, and recorded an additional 585 passages for Lit2Go. We have also posted most of the passages to the USF iTunes server for a wider distribution. The Lit2Go passages are the most downloaded of any K12 content on iTunes U according to Apple iTunes staff. Fifteen thousand Lit2Go CDs were distributed at FETC: 5,000 K-4 samplers, 5,000 5-8 samplers, and 5,000 CDs of Florida literature. Fifteen hundred of each of these three titles have been produced for the T&L institutes. Several thousand additional CDs have been burned in-house for use in conferences and trainings.

No Strings Attached. During the project period we increased the number of lesson plans from about 100 a year ago to 175 lesson plans currently on the site.

Exploring Florida. During the past year we have added content to the Floripedia and stereoview sections of Exploring Florida, but the largest addition has been in the maps section. We completely reworked the maps section from scratch, ensuring that each map had significant metadata, both a color and B/W PDF, and a Flash-based puzzle. Most of the entries also have a GoogleEarth file and many have GIS files to use with mapping software.

The third cadre of 31 Master Digital Educators has been selected. They have received an introductory orientation to the program via videoconference. Their actual training will commence at the Tampa Teaching and Learning Institute, July 21-25. With the addition of the third MDE cohort, we now have Master Digital Educators in 41 districts around the state, representing public, charter, and private schools. Four online instructional sessions have been provided for the new cohort. Each topic was offered twice.

Eight Teaching and Learning Institutes have been scheduled for the summer of 2008. Registration is now open for all of the institutes. Two thirds of Florida's districts have registered participants to date. Additional registrations have been received from private schools, university lab schools, and the Florida Department of Education. The following map indicates the location of the eight institutes and with the districts attending highlighted in green. A new online registration system (http://tools.fcit.usf.edu/reg/index.php) and elective selection tool (available only to registered participants on Thursday of each institute) have been created for the institutes.

FCIT staff have supervised the production of all of the training materials for the Teaching and Learning Institutes. This year's manual includes PDFs of all the session notes, a getting started guide, and three support CD-ROMs. An additional set of 12 CD-ROMS has been produced as a digital asset library of copyright-friendly resources for participants to use in their projects. An online Digital Asset Metatagging Tool (http://tools.fcit.usf.edu/tlinstitutes/) has been created enabling participants to immediately upload and metatag the assets they create in each session. We have also finished the online Lesson Planning Tool (http://tools.fcit.usf.edu/myedu/index.php) that districts can use in institute follow-up activities.
