Tom McGuffie: The Tet Offensive
Clip 5

I had a pet monkey at this time. His name was Lieutenant Fuzz. Anybody ever had a pet monkey [asks the students]? They’re really funny and a lot like humans. I had to tie Lt. Fuzz to the antenna of my jeep because he would run away or steal food. I’m serious, he would steal. When we were in the firing battery where the guns were, he would sneak to the mess hall and take whatever he could get. Everyone hated him but me. At that particular time, we were in the northern part of the city of Wey, where the worst fighting ever in the Vietnam war took place - the Tet Offensive of 1968. That’s when it started - all sorts of small arms fire. The fighting really got bad. I was afraid Fuzz would get hit, so I cut the rope with my knife and he ran off into the jungle. I think he did get hit. I don't know if he survived or not.
