Selective Underlining
This strategy helps students learn how to underline key ideas in a text. It also helps with organization and remembering information.
- The teacher has the students read a short passage.
- The teacher projects the passage onto a screen using a transparency and overhead projector. The students should also have a copy to mark.
- The teacher explains why readers underline (organizes information and helps you remember what you have read).
- The teacher models how to underline selectively. It is important not to underline entire sentences, but rather key points of the sentence.
- The teacher continues to model while increasing the length of text, and providing independent practice.
