The Kehlsteinhaus, commonly called the "Eagle's Nest," was built on the Kehlstein Mountain high above Obersalzberg as present for Hitler on his fiftieth birthday.
A winding mountain road leads to a tunnel entrance.
The date 1938 appears above the tunnel entrance.
A 406-foot tunnel leads to an elevator for the final ascent to the Kehlsteinhaus.
Today, the Kehlsteinhaus (or Eagle's Nest) is a popular restaurant. The marble fireplace shown in this photograph is original, but souvenir hunters have chipped pieces off.
