Lizards and Snakes

Materials

About 30 cubes or other manipulatives per student

3 long pieces of yarn, tied together

Notes to the teacher

Students should understand that the cubes represent the animals in the problem.

Directions:

1. The lizards have a choice of what rings to enter.

• A total of 8 lizards are in ring A
• A total of 6 lizards are in ring B
• A total of 8 lizards are in ring C
• 3 lizards are in ring A and B only
• 1 lizard is in rings B and C only

 How many lizards are in the rings?

Write a note to your friend describing how you found out the total number of lizards in the rings.

2. All snakes have a choice of what rings to enter. Snakes may have only one or more than one color.

 Snakes in ring A are black. Snakes in ring B are red. Snakes in ring C are yellow.

Shade the area where the snakes with black and red coloring would be in the ring.

Shade the area where the snakes with black, red, and yellow coloring would be in the picture.
