  • Read and write a fraction as part of a whole or part of set, and simplify or find equivalent fractions
  • Read, write, round, rename mixed numbers
  • Compare and order fractions and mixed numbers
  • Estimate and measure length in customary units

Materials

  • Student recording sheet
  • Customary measuring tapes or yardsticks
  • Chart paper
  • Colored markers
  • Paper and pencil

Student arrangement

  • Small group

Task

Present the problem on the student Recording Sheet to your students.


Performance Criteria

  • Does the student accurately measure each height in inches?

  • Does the student correctly express each height in feet as a mixed number?

  • Does the student correctly order each height from shortest to tallest?

  • The use of an accurate bar graph for task #4 could be accepted as an extension of the student’s knowledge.

 

Directions:

The Health Office wants a record of the heights of all fifth-grade students. You can help by preparing a chart of the heights of the students in your group.

1. Measure and record the heights of your group members to the nearest inch.




2. Express each height in feet and inches.


3. Write each height as a mixed number in lowest terms.


4. Show the heights in order from shortest to tallest on a chart.


5. Write an explanation describing how you accomplished this task.
