Entrance Gate. This grand memorial was created in the 1950s as an imposing backdrop for East German anti-fascist commemoration ceremonies. The architects were Ludwig Deiters, Hans Grothewohl, Horst Kutzat, Hubert Matthes, Hugo Namslauer, and Kurt Tausendschön.

First Stela. This is the first of seven stelae (stone monuments) along a descending processional way. The relief sculptures on the front of each stela record the suffering and resistance of the Buchenwald prisoners and reflect a Communist interpretation of events. The stelae were created by Reneé Graetz, Waldemar Grzimek, and Hans Kies. On the back of each stela is a poem by Johannes R. Becher.
