This activity may be done in metric or customary units.

This item requires a class activity to collect data. Have each child measure his/her height and foot length.

As the data is collected, post it on the chalkboard. List data entries as they are collected. Do not organize the data in any way.

 

Materials


Tools for measuring (graph paper, dot paper, rulers, etc.)

 

Directions:


1. On your paper, organize data collected about the heights and foot lengths of the children in the class.

 

 

 

2. Describe the patterns you see developing.

 

 

3. What is the possible foot length of a child 52” (132 cm) tall?

 

 

4. How tall would a person probably be if his feet measure 15” (38 cm) long? Discuss the reasonableness of this answer.
