Procedure

  • Teacher supplies words
  • The teacher selects words with similar features from a text and writes them on the left side of a matrix.
  • Students supply features
  • At the teacher's prompting, the students volunteer features possessed by one or more of the words on the left side of the matrix. The teacher writes these features across the top of the matrix and fills in the lines of the matrix grid.
  • Complete matrix
  • Either individually or as a class, the matrix is completed; a check mark is placed in each cell where a word has the indicated feature.
  • Read passage
  • The teacher allows time for the students to read the assigned passage.
  • Review matrix
  • After the passage is read, the matrix is reviewed and any errors are corrected.
