Graphic Organizer Functions

The construction of a graphic organizer is a process that requires active thinking rather than rote repetition. It is through this process of construction that graphic organizers help readers develop a deeper understanding of an idea, concept, or story.

When students apply reading material to a graphic organizer, it reinforces their understanding of the material by requiring them to reconstruct the information in their own words, and, at the same time, it gives them ownership of their ideas.

Graphic organizers also serve a formative function for teachers by identifying students' misconceptions through misdirected links or wrong connections.
