English Ivy on Tree
- Description: English ivy growing on a tree in Maclay Gardens. Hedera helix, or more commonly known as "English ivy" is named after the ancient Greek word for "twist" because of its appearance. It is native to Europe, the west coast of South America, Southwest Asia, and Australia but has also become naturalized in North America. This ivy grows to around 25 meters high and can be found growing on trees, as pictured here, cliffs, walls, and even along the ground. It is characterized by its five lobed leaf. It also produces flowers that contain nectar for bees and birds, but is poisonous to humans.
