Shishi Odoshi, or "deer chaser." The water from the spout (top) flows onto the hinged bamboo tube (bottom) and causes it to clap against the rocks below. This was originally used to scare off deer from rice fields, but is now a common Japanese ornamental garden fountain.

Early Rock Garden. This open-style rock garden evokes the image of water with coarse gravel.

Karesansui Late Rock Garden. This is an abstract garden that consists of a field of carefully raked gravel in a large rectangular area.

Hiraniwa Flat Garden. These type of gardens evolved out of late rock gardens and incorporate a design technique known as borrowed scenery.

Modern Romantic Garden. This type of Japanese garden is more natural than the abstract rock gardens. It is similar to some Western gardening styles that place plants as they might be found in the wild.
