Strategy Overview

A graphic organizer is any type of drawing that uses geometric shapes to make connections between information. Graphic organizers are used to help people better understand information by showing how various pieces of information are related to each other.

Different types of graphic organizers are used with different types of information. Some are used to show cause and effect relationships, some to show a sequence of events, and others are used to classify information. Teachers and students can even create their own unique graphic organizers. One thing that all graphic organizers have in common is that they help form a visual picture of information that allows the user to discover relationships, sequences, or patterns.
