Description: Brochure from a reunion of former Priosners of War in Stalag Luft III. Hines told story of “Popeye”, a German non-commissioned officer, equivalent to a US Seargent. Popeye was the POWs point of contact to the Germans. During the forced evacuation from Sagan to Moosburg the men were packed on “40 and 8” rail cars, so named because they could hold either 40 men or 8 horses. On the journey the train went through martialing yards, during which some of the men wanted to get out to stretch their legs. Popeye told them to stay in, most likely saving their lives.
