Introduction

Math Skill/Concept: Skip count by tens using concrete materials.


Prerequisite Skills:

  • One to one correspondence
  • Counting by ones up to one hundred
  • Understanding of one, ten, hundred
  • Grouping by tens

Learning Objectives:

1) Skip count by tens using concrete objects.

Important Ideas for Implementation:

1) Review/link to patterns

2) Cue to changes in pattern with color

3) Use proportional materials that can be grouped or bundled (e.g. straws, unfix cubes, popsicles sticks).

4) Use appropriate place value language (e.g. two tens, four ones).

5) Differentiate the proportional relationships between one, ten and hundred.

6) This teaching plan outlines the steps to use when teaching students how to skip count by tens using objects. The same sequence of steps as outlined in this plan should be followed for skip counting by twos or fives.
