Elementary Teacher Residency Program

The Elementary Teacher Residency Program is a special cohort designed for undergraduate students within the Elementary Education program of the department of Childhood Education & Literacy Studies. The purpose of this program is to enhance students’ learning experiences because they learn to teach from within the classroom.

This program is designed to develop exemplary elementary teachers who target enhanced student learning. Students will learn to teach by taking courses that are highly embedded in elementary classrooms and schools, and often co-taught by elementary school faculty. This is a full-time program.

Program Highlights

  • Gain first-hand training in field work
  • Encourage teaching that is innovative, inclusive, integrated, and inquiry-based
  • The course curriculum for this program will emphasize inquiry, inclusion, integration, innovation, and the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)
  • Specific classes are reserved for this cohort
  • Integrate technology into all elements of teaching and learning

Application Requirements

  • Eligible participants for the Residency Program should meet the following requirements:
  • Admitted to the Elementary Education program in the Fall 2011 semester
  • Registered as a full time student
  • Be available to take courses 7:30am-3:30pm Monday through Friday (including summer) in addition to working at an assigned school for a year-long residency
  • Dedicated, focused, organized, and flexible
  • Have access to a MacBook to participate in a highly rich, technology-driven learning and teaching environment
  • Residency Requirement
  • This is a full-time, five semester experience
  • Students will be assigned a year-long residency in a local K-5 classroom
