What Can I Do With An Ed.S. In Reading/Language Arts?

The Educational Specialist Degree prepares individuals who aspire to pursue careers in teaching colleges, school districts, and publishing companies.

How Long Will The Ed.S. Program Take?

Course work can be completed within two years of admission into the program. The thesis may be completed within one semester and up to two years. The entire program may be completed in 2 to 4 years, depending on the student’s full-time or part-time status.

Are Any Of The Courses Taught Online Or Taught On Regional Campuses?

The Ed.S. program is taught on the Tampa campus. There is the possibility of taking some courses online.

Are There Scholarships Or Financial Aid Available?

Yes. The University of South Florida and the College of Education, as well as many independent organizations offer scholarships and fellowships.

What Qualifications Are Required To Enter The Ph.D. Program In Reading/Language Arts?

Educational Specialists must possess a strong academic record and they must read and apply research into their practice.

Students must have a Masters degree in Reading, Language, Literature or related field or a Masters degree in another field with at least 9 hours of Reading, Language, Literature at the graduate level.

Many of the Ed.S. students in Reading/Language Arts have backgrounds in elementary or secondary education. However, students with backgrounds in speech pathology, information science, theater, communication science, linguistics, and literature may also have the background experience and relevant graduate courses for advanced graduate study in reading/language arts.

Do I Have To Take The GRE?

Yes. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission. Scores must be in the 30th percentile or higher. The GRE must be taken within the last 5 years. We will accept the highest score.

When Should I Apply?

The deadline for applications is February 15th for Fall admission. We encourage Fall admissions only.

What Happens After I Apply?

The application process has two steps. 1. You complete the online application and submit your transcripts and GRE scores to the Graduate School. 2. You submit your supporting documents (letters of reference, vita, and writing samples) to Lisa Adkins (see below). Once you complete the online application and submit your transcripts and GRE scores, the Graduate School will send your application to our department. If we have your supporting documents, we will contact you for an interview. If we do not have your supporting documents, then we will ask you to complete the application process.
