Floripedia is a collection of articles about Florida and Florida history. Most of the articles were written a long time ago. The original source is given at the end of each article. Be sure to notice the date when the article was written. Also keep in mind that the articles were written for a variety of purposes. For example, an article that was originally written to promote a Florida town will most likely emphasize all of the good features of the town and skip over any problems.
Students and teachers can use these articles in two ways:
First, the articles are a good source of historical information such as the number of boxes of oranges shipped north or the population of a town in a particular year. Many of these facts would be difficult to find elsewhere. To begin, click on the first letter of the topic you are looking for:Secondly, the articles tell us about the opinions of people who lived long ago. Here you will find what people thought about topics such as draining the Everglades or the rights of minorities. Many of the ideas expressed a long time ago are very different from the ideas most people hold now.
