On this date in 1892, Elizabeth Cody Stanton delivered her address, “Solitude of Self” before the Committee of the Judiciary of the United States Congress. The speech—with its emphasis on women’s intellectual and spiritual independence—is considered by some to mark the birth of modern feminism.
