Well we did this lesson today with third grade students. Every spring the technology teacher hatches ducklings or some type of egg in the classroom, so we wanted to do an integrated unit using research skills in the media center so they can have real world experience, seeing the ducks being hatching and then researching about it.

So they came to the media center and did a web quest that I created having ducks come to school. So what the children did, is they went out and researched what can humans do, and what can ducks do, and they created a double bubble map comparing the two. Of course there are some similarities and some differences.

Their four part PowerPoint slide where they used the information about what can ducks do, what can humans do, and they crossed over; they tried to make a story of what a duck acting as a human, or a human acting as a duck, so they are going to use some creativity in this lesson. So use research skills, technology skills, and their imagination to come up with a story on their own.

  • Discuss the life cycle of ducks (eggs hatching)
  • Research similarities and differences between ducks and humans using WebQuest
  • Compare and contrast ducks and humans
  • Identify literature that uses personification
  • Use the writing process to write their own story on the topic

Procedure

  • Students are guided through a WebQuest by the teacher to explore characteristics of ducks and humans using a laptop computer and projector.
  • The students discuss what ducks can do and what humans can do.
  • To illustrate personification of animals, the story, Giggle, Giggle Quack by Doreen Cronin is read.
  • The students work on individual desktops using Inspiration software to create a double bubble map, type of Venn diagram to characterize humans and ducks.
  • Then, students create their own stories with personification using PowerPoint software.

Technology Present

  • Individual desktops, laptop
  • LCD projector
  • Inspiration software
  • WebQuest
  • PowerPoint software

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of videos on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Simple or even out-dated technology can be used at the higher levels of technology integration just as the latest or most complex technology can be used at lower levels.
