Objectives

  • Students will research animals and habitats.
  • Students will generate guiding questions related to public policy on resource management.
  • Students will use digital cameras to record visual evidence of animal behavior and habitats.
  • Students will use GPS devices to record waypoints associated with observations.
  • Students will draw conclusions based on recorded data.
  • Students will form new questions for future research.

Procedure

  • Prior to this lesson, students should have access to a basic tutorial for the hardware and software they will be using.
  • In the classroom, provide students with the location of the field trip and basic information about the habitat.
  • Challenge students to generate research questions that they can answer with data on plant and animal life during the field experience.
  • Students record research questions and conduct background literature research prior to field trip.
  • Student teams use mapping software to plan observation routes.
  • Students look for evidence of animal activity and record data with GPS devices and digital cameras.
  • Students collect initial data on mobile computers, check for gaps, and collect additional data if necessary to answer research questions.
  • Students interpret data to answer research questions.
  • Students present research questions, observations, and conclusions to their peers using their choice of methods.
