This is an eighth grade American History traditional class. Once a week we spend a day studying and working with geography skills, and today we chose Wednesday and we’re using latitude and longitude.

I’m going over that and we’re using that by looking at some of the recent hurricanes that we’ve had in the area. And the kids have been given a list of things that they have to plot on the map and they’re doing that.

We’re using the active board and the software that goes along with that. I have taken the exact map that they have and scanned it into my computer, and then I have it up there on the screen, up there for them.

And then, we have them in their seats plotting it, and then after that when they feel that they have plotted it correctly they go up to the board and they plot it on the board. The kids can check their own answers, along with what’s up on the board, so that way they can have instant feedback on whether or not they are doing it correctly and they can automatically change it.

Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify the stages and categories of storm development.
  • Students will understand the factors that lead to the development of a hurricane.
  • Students will practice latitude and longitude by plotting different hurricanes on a map.
  • Students will determine the effects of a hurricane on the Florida’s physical environment and predict effects to industries.

Procedure

  • Students will explore various websites on hurricanes such as Hurricane Strike!
  • Students will then plot the paths of different hurricanes on the ActivBoard.

Grade Level: 6-8

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed.
