For the lesson today we’re focusing on, our lesson essential question is about adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Our lesson essential question includes mixed numbers, so we needed to stop and summarize. I divided them up into teams, and half of them had adding fractions with like denominators and half of them had subtracting fractions with like denominators.

We gave each student and team a rubric that they had to follow, their guidelines were that they had to be specific. They had to use at least one form of technology, but they weren’t limited to what they could use. They could use more than one if they wanted, which many teams had selected. They could use PowerPoint, Movie Maker, Flip cameras, Audacity, I-karaoke. It all depended on what project they wanted to compile and complete to ultimately fulfill the task at hand and complete the rubric.

Objectives

• Students will create a project of their choice to show how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.

Procedure

• Students will be assigned groups and topics, either adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators.
• Students will choose a way to teach the concept to others while following a given rubric.
• The finished projects will be presented to the class.
