Our project for today is that we’re doing a magazine, and the students will write the articles, they will setup the advertising, they’ll do the layout on the computer, they’ll do the pictures, everything. Cover to cover. We’ve setup so that we have an editorial board; each student has a job at the magazine that they have to accomplish in this activity. So they are actually, they’re doing the writing; they’re using the computers for the writing as well as the layout and research.

Objectives

  • Students will learn to use Pages for publishing a magazine.
  • Students will learn to use a shared file.
  • Students will learn to use a digital camera to load pictures, crop pictures and drop into a shared file.
  • Students will learn to use a scanner to scan student art into a shared file for magazine publication.
  • Students will engage in creative writing while taking the responsibility to publish the work in a magazine.

Procedure

  • Each student applies for and is offered a job at the magazine: Pre-AP CLASS. Each student is an editor of one department.
  • One student in the photography dept. will be shown how to take pictures using a digital camera, open the pictures in iPhoto, crop the pictures, save the picture and drop it into a shared file. This student will then show the other four photographers how to do this procedure.
  • The teacher will explain how to use Pages using the projector and teacher laptop. Students will then open the program and experiment with the program. The layout dept. for the magazine will begin designing the layout of the magazine.
  • The editor of photography will scan the artwork submitted by the students. This artwork will be dropped into the shared folder for the layout dept. to utilize.

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Effective pedagogy is our concern, not whether the tech involved is the latest, greatest, or most expensive. In fact, most of the sample videos were recorded some time ago as part of the original development of the Technology Integration Matrix. As you view these videos, focus on the teaching practices. When using the TIM-O to observe a lesson, remember that you can display the detailed indicators by clicking the tab on the right if you are completing a Matrix-based observation or are reviewing the TIM profile of a question-based lesson. The TIM Tools Admin Guide contains additional suggestions for observing a lesson and developing a TIM profile.
