We’re using technology in a lot of exciting ways in our classrooms. One of our projects is a poetry project where the students get to use their laptops to research a poem, and develop a lesson that they give and teach poetry to their fellow students.

They find out information about the poet and the poem. The students then make a movie video of sorts, of the actual poem, and they try to project the meaning of the poem through pictures as well as text.

In one example, the actual poet who is still living, Cheryl Sawyer, who wrote this very moving poem about 9/11 is corresponding with my students. My students initiated e‐mailing her and she graciously responded and this poet has asked to see a copy of the students’ work. And so the students will be sending their iMovie in QuickTime format to the poet. So that’s one of the many ways we’re using laptops in the English classroom.

Objectives

  • Read and understand poetry as a literary form
  • Research specific poems to develop an understanding of the meaning
  • Research specific poets
  • Develop a lesson on a specific poet and poem
  • Teach the poem and provide background information to the class through an iMovie

Procedure

  • Students use individual laptops with internet access to research poets and their poems.
  • Students are encouraged to correspond with the authors to get a better understanding of the poem.
  • Once the research is complete, students are to compile all of their information into an iMovie illustrating the meaning of the poem.
  • Finally, students present their products to the class.

Technology Present

  • Individual laptop computers
  • Internet access
  • iMovie software
  • LCD projector

Grade Level: 9-12

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Effective pedagogy is our concern, not whether the tech involved is the latest, greatest, or most expensive. In fact, most of the sample videos were recorded some time ago as part of the original development of the Technology Integration Matrix. As you view these videos, focus on the teaching practices. When using the TIM-O to observe a lesson, remember that you can display the detailed indicators by clicking the tab on the right if you are completing a Matrix-based observation or are reviewing the TIM profile of a question-based lesson. The TIM Tools Admin Guide contains additional suggestions for observing a lesson and developing a TIM profile.
