This is a second grade class working on a science project. We’re working on clouds and weather. The lesson today is an extension of using the book by Tomie de Paola based on some of the Sunshine State Standards and weather and how it’s associated with the earth.
The students took the information from the cloud book and their science book to create a Kidspiration map on clouds, basing it off of where they’re found in the atmosphere, the color of clouds, what kind of weather it brings, and any other extraneous information that they know.
I love Inspiration and Kidspiration, I think its one of the greatest things the kids can use. I use it to extend reading lessons using Venn diagrams, and I use it for storyboards. The students really love to use technology, and what great about that is you can incorporate it into any aspect of learning and teaching and because the kids are that Nintendo generation they love anything with keyboards, a mouse, control pads, and they want to use it, and they’ll do anything to use it.

Objectives

    Students will be able to:

  • Read a piece of literature on clouds with assistance
  • Read the science textbook for foundational information on the earth’s atmosphere
  • Discuss atmospheric changes
  • Discuss clouds by cloud type and associated weather conditions
  • Diagram information on clouds using graphic organizers

Procedure

  • The students will read the science textbook with the teacher’s assistance to gain basic understanding on the topic: clouds, weather, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Students will read The Cloud Book, by Tomie de Paola.
  • Students will work individually on laptops with Kidspiration software to develop a map on clouds identifying atmospheric conditions, color and type, and what type of weather each indicates.

Technology Present

  • Laptops with Kid Spiration software available from Inspiration,
  • The Cloud Book, by Tomie de Paola

Grade Level: K-2

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Effective pedagogy is our concern, not whether the tech involved is the latest, greatest, or most expensive. In fact, most of the sample videos were recorded some time ago as part of the original development of the Technology Integration Matrix. As you view these videos, focus on the teaching practices. When using the TIM-O to observe a lesson, remember that you can display the detailed indicators by clicking the tab on the right if you are completing a Matrix-based observation or are reviewing the TIM profile of a question-based lesson. The TIM Tools Admin Guide contains additional suggestions for observing a lesson and developing a TIM profile.
